A 50/50 result is mathematically centered. A result near 55/45 is still visually strong on many cards, while 60/40 shows a more noticeable shift. Ratios beyond 60/40 on the front generally create more grading risk, especially when the card is otherwise being submitted with a top-grade expectation.

Centering is only one part of the grade

Perfect centering does not make a card gem mint. Graders also inspect corners, edges, surface quality, print defects, staining, creases, dents, and alterations. A card with a 50/50 result can still receive a lower grade because of a small indentation or a scratch that is difficult to see in normal room lighting.

Inspect the front and back under a bright, movable light. Tilt the card slowly to reveal scratches, roller lines, print lines, dents, and texture damage.   • Measuring a sleeved card: Sleeve edges, glare, and shadows can hide the true card boundary. Remove the sleeve when doing so will not put the card at risk.
  • Using a tilted photograph: Perspective can make the top and bottom widths look different even on a centered card. Keep the camera parallel to the card.
